Penalty kicks were the difference as Eintracht Frankfurt lifted the Europa League trophy in Seville.
It was an historic day for both teams so some nerves in the first half were inevitable. The opening period was cagey with John Lundstram's header, tipped over the bar, the closest Rangers came.
The Ibrox side did open the scoring after the break and it was one Frankfurt defender Tuta won't want to see back as he slipped and let Joe Aribo through to slot home.
But the equaliser soon followed with Rafael Borre slipping between Connor Goldson and Calvin Bassey to fire home.
There was to be no separating them as it went to extra-time and then penalties and a perfect showing from the Germans saw them edge it.
All but one of the ten penalties hit the back of the net but it was Aaron Ramsey who saw his spot-kick saved by Kevin Trapp.
Here's how the Rangers players rated.
Rangers player ratings
Allan McGregor : Oldest player to compete in a Europa League final and gathered an 11th minute strike from Sow with ease before excelling himself by shoving a rasping effort by Knauff past a post. Relieved to see Kamada clip a shot over his bar when a leveller looked inevitable and given no chance with Borre strike. 8
James Tavernier : Isolated early on with Kostic twice delivering crosses, struggled against the dangerman in what was an unconvincing and nervy first-half from the Gers skipper. Trademark high pressing runs down the flank were restricted by Frankfurt's dominance.
Escaped a booking for tug on Lindstrom but much more assured after the interval but out of sorts. 6
Connor Goldson : Kept his composure and shape impressively to hold his backline together and cope with early storm but very fortunate not concede a penalty at start of second-half when he clipped Borre inside the box. Gifted Kamada a golden 67th minute chance. Failed to anticipate cross at Borre equaliser. 5
Calvin Bassey : Turned inside out by Lindstrom in 17th minute scare but recovered to clear the danger. Vital front post interception on half hour mark also a redeeming moment. Allowed Borre to get goalside and slip in a leveller but another impressive and mature display at the highest level. Superb powers of recovery. 8
Borna Barisic : Failed to track Knauff who caused problems early on but grew into contest and became a crucial outlet on the left as Rangers tried to build periods of possession. A couple of careless moments when his usual reliable left foot failed to find its mark but a steady night with little frills with best moment an extra-time shot which was beaten away by Trapp. 6
Glen Kamara : Patrolled his midfield area with usual composure and awareness but took half an hour to get into his stride.
Moment of high anxiety after deflecting a Lindstrom shot inches past a post seconds after the restart. Influence dropped as Frankfurt's dominance grew. 6
John Lundstram : Deployed in defensive midfield role and offered protection but survived major early scare after going in high on Rode to draw blood on the Frankfurt skipper's head. Key interceptions and ball winning ability provided much needed security against Frankfurt's speed on the break. Header tipped over the top but usual unsung high calibre performance. 7
Ryan Jack : Tidy and efficient in possession and kept one eye on the deep running Borre as the Colombian attempted to find space to spark his side. Wastefully fired a shot over the top moments before the break. Started to struggle to shut down and press in engine room and made way for Davis. 6
Ryan Kent : Usually the man for the big occasion but it was all a bit flat and uninspired. Went down too easily after ninth minute collision when he threatened to get himself free just outside the box. Played on the periphery and moments of quality were all too infrequent. Capable of so much better but not clinical or influential enough. 6
Joe Aribo : A needs-must central striking role but all too often failed to provide a focus for his team-mates. Inches away from a brilliant opener with a left foot strike which looked destined for the top corner. Struggled to break free from Ndicka's shackles before sending Rangers into raptures by calmly racing clear after a defensive slip. Booked. 7
Scott Wright : Superbly spun Silva Melo in opening moments to trigger a promising attack by releasing Aribo for a run on goal. Recovered from a heavy challenge which again allowed Aribo a shot at goal. Prepared to offer himself and take the hits in attempt to get his side up the pitch. Lively and positive before making way for Sakala. Booked. 7
Subs used
Steven Davis : On for Jack in the 74th minute and used every bit of his intelligence and nous to bring a degree of control to his side's play 4
Fashion Sakala : Replaced Wright and added an instant injection of pace into attack. Tame shot was easily held by Trapp and careless moments when he failed to hold up play. 3
Scott Arfield : Thrown on for extra-time in place of Kamara and fired a shot just over the top in the 93rd minute but added much needed presence in the final third. 4
James Sands : Given extra-time run for the tiring Aribo and managed to plug the midfield gaps and bring energy to a tiring midfield. 3
Aaron Ramsey : Thrown on with penalties in mind and was the penalty sinner which broke Rangers hearts as Trapp blocked his feet with his legs. 1
Kemar Roofe : On for last few minutes and barely a touch. 1
