Rangers 'offside goal' frustration for Motherwell boss as he says it provides VAR 'seed of doubt'

Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell says he is seeking clarity over Rangers' third goal in today's defeat after video evidence showed Fashion Sakala was offside in the build-up.

And he admits the call has put 'a seed of doubt' in his mind over VAR.

The Steelmen went down 4-2 in a battling display against the Scottish Premiership title hopefuls and also finished the game with 10 men after Callum Slattery saw red late on.

Slattery's sending off has also irked the Fir Park gaffer but the most frustrating factor for Kettlewell is that replays show Sakala to be in an offside position in the lead up to Todd Cantwell's 63rd minute strike, when the game was tied at 2-2.

The defeat ended Kettlwell's four-game unbeaten start as Motherwell boss and on the controversial third goal for Rangers he said: "I'm not calling anyone out here, I'm genuinely asking for clarity on it.

"The pictures I've seen for the third goal and a really important one at a big time in the game, it looks to me as if our player is the blue line - which is Dan Casey - and he is front of the red line of Sakala.

"We never berated an official, we never berated a referee, we are not hammering the system here in any way, but it is a big goal at a big time in a game I felt we were doing pretty well in.

"So from that there is a degree of frustration because it looks like Sakala is offside from the lines.

"But I will stand corrected if someone comes to me and tells me no, in actual fact, it is definitely onside - which it doesn't look to me just now.

"We do [have faith in VAR] and I have been on the other side of this as being a pundit and passing comment on this, but the one thing I always stood by when I wasn't manager of Motherwell was that the clubs have paid for this system to make sure that these things are crystal clear.

"We know if you are onside or offside. There's no opinion in it, there's no grey area, as such, but coming away from the game today I think there is a wee bit of a grey area.

"I've spoken to a number of different people. Some who think it is one way, some who think it is the other, and I don't think we've had too many of those across the game in Scotland.

"But I think the third Rangers goal plants a seed of doubt. It does in my head and that's where I will seek a bit of clarity to see if I'm wrong because, as it stands just now, Sakala is offside."

Motherwell will be without midfielder Callum Slattery for the visit to Hibs on April 1 and his dismissal - a second booking for catching Cantwell with his arm - was also a sore point.

Kettlewell added: "It's massive for us and I don't think there is anything in it at all.

"I don't think he's tried to hurt the opponent. We took a little bit of a risk in the change we made.

Referee Nick Walsh sends off Motherwell's Callum Slattery (left) for a challenge on Rangers star Todd Cantwell (PA)

"We knew he was on a yellow card, we there were players that had had numerous fouls and hadn't been given yellow cards.

"You are kind of hoping that there wasn't a bad tackle in the game, he wasn't showing signs that he was teetering on the edge because you know that can be the case sometimes, and it is my job to make that call.

"But we felt Callum looked fresh, we felt he was on top of things, knowing that he was on a yellow and one wrong decision could cost us.

"That wasn't a situation he could get sent off from.

"If the player swung an elbow and caught the opposition player flush in the face, I'll be the guy that says he's got it wrong, made a terrible decision and it has cost us and hurt us and a big time in the game.

"That isn't the situation. He hasn't swung his arm or tried to hurt the opponent. Yes there is contact with the shoulder and when two players come together, there will be some form of contact with the face, but that is never a second yellow card."
