Rangers mad striker earns surprise move to Spanish La Liga club

Scottish striker Oli McBurnie is poised to join Las Palmas as a free agent after departing Sheffield United.

The 28-year-old, who had also been linked with Rangers this summer, has reached a verbal agreement with the La Liga club.

McBurnie is expected to undergo a medical examination this Friday, paving the way for his transfer to Spain.

The 16-times capped Scotland internationalist will pen a three-year contract with the Canary Island-based club.

McBurnie was one of nine players to be released by Sheffield United following their relegation into the English Championship following the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign, although there were reports that he had been offered the chance to remain at Bramall Lane on reduced terms.

Transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, broke the news to his 22.5million followers on X (formerly Twitter), and it's fair to say some punters couldn't take the move to Gran Canaria seriously.

One comment read: "Adams to Italy. McBurnie to Spain. The Scotsmen are looking for some extended vacations."

The former Swansea City, Barnsley and Bradford talisman netted just 29 times from 159 appearances at Sheffield United, which is perhaps why many who reacted online have suggested McBurnie has earned a dream move.

Another respondent wrote: "The most random transfer of the summer."

A third joked: "Scottish bloke playing in the Canaries? Great day for Spanish suntan lotion merchants."

"Brilliant move for Oli McBurnie into La Liga, a new culture," an additional contributor remarked.

"Will be very interesting to see how he adapts there and to the Spanish way of playing. Can't really turn the opportunity down either in my opinion, it's a transition in his career. Strange fit but one of interest."
