Rangers legends put to sword by Cambuslang during charity match as boss hails 'great turnout'

Cambuslang Rangers players of the past defeated Rangers Legends 5-2 in the Billy Drummond Memorial Match.

The home side raced into a five-goal lead before the Ibrox heroes got two back before the final whistle.

A star-studded team full of former Light Blues favourites including names like Colin Hendry, Charlie Miller, Marvin Andrews and Derek Ferguson was fielded.

Camby's team meanwhile had John Gemmell up top, who's just off the back of helping the Somervell park club win West of Scotland Football League Conference B.

Current first-team co-boss Billy Campbell took charge of the game alongside Paul McColl and believes it was a good outing for all involved.

He said: "It was a decent wee day. There was great turnout. We know Charlie Miller well and we know a few more of the boys. So it was very kind of the players to get organised and come in.

"It's all for the family of young Billy who passed away in tragic circumstances. That is what has to be taken into consideration. Everybody wants to enjoy themselves.

"But we also want to do the right thing by people at times and hopefully we have managed to do that collectively.

"There was a bit of organisation that needed to be done as we knew this was coming up. We got it done and hopefully it has achieved what it set out to, and we have done the right thing for the family."

Young Somervell Park fan Billy passed away aged just 10-years-old in October 2020, having lived with cerebral palsy since he was born.

Camby renamed their main stand ‘The Billy Drummond Stand’ in his honour last July and the Wee Gers were raising funds for charitable causes, with a healthy crowd attending proceedings.
