Rangers legend's 2012 speech revisited as icon's promise comes true with club on brink of Europa League glory

Ally McCoist predicted a return to greateness for his beloved Rangers when in charge 10 years ago - and the East Kilbride legend's words have risen to the surface again.

The 59-year-old was dancing for joy in Govan last night as a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig secured passage to this year's Europa League final.

It's their first venture into a major European final since 2008's UEFA Cup run under late boss Walter Smith, who hailed from Lanark.

McCoist found himself in charge of the club where he is record goalscorer as financial problems sent them tumbling into Scotland's fourth tier in 2012.

But he had an incline that the Light Blues would get back to where they once stood and took a big step towards that by claiming Premiership glory last year.

Now standing one match against Frankfurt away from a European trophy, EK's famous son has had an old interview rolled out again.

He said way back in 2012: “At this moment in time we're wounded. There are probably one or two people out there enjoying it, maybe one or two people having a wee fly kick.

"I would suggest to them to give a right good kick just now because we will not be where we are for long."

He told BT Sport after full-time: “I can’t tell you how proud I am of that team.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to come to this place and I’ve seen victories over Bayern Munich.

"I’ve seen victories over Dynamo Kiev, I’ve seen victories over Leeds United but tonight’s atmosphere has been the best – the best!"
