Rangers legend Andy Goram told loved ones to wear Rangers ties rather than black to his funeral

Rangers legend Andy Goram asked loved ones not to wear black ties to his funeral and instead wear blue Rangers club ties.

The goalie made the request as one of his last wishes to honour the club at his funeral due to take place tomorrow (July 18).

The 58-year-old was diagnosed with stage four oesophageal cancer in April. It came after he thought he was suffering heartburn and indigestion.

Andy been in St Andrew's hospice for three weeks after he became too ill to be treated at home. Loved ones including Danny, ex-wife Miriam, Brown and former Gers striker Ally McCoist were with him in his final moments when he died on July 2.

Publican Stan Gordon, who helped organise the funeral, said: “Andy wouldn’t have wanted everyone to wear black. At one point he was talking about a royal blue coffin.

“So having as many people as possible wearing a Rangers tie will be the next best thing. He joked that he’s sorry he’s going to miss the service and it sounded like one he’d enjoy. He would have appreciated seeing the club’s colours at the church service.”

The player’s funeral cortege will leave from Stan’s pub and Goram’s local, the Stonefield Tavern in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, at 12pm before going past Ibrox Stadium at 1pm, where wreaths will be laid. Hundreds of fans are expected to say farewell.

The Wellington Church in Hillhead, Glasgow, which can accommodate up to 900 people, will hold the service. Ex-teammates Ally McCoist and John Brown and past Rangers chairman Donald Findlay QC will give eulogies.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed Goram for Manchester United, is also expected to attend.

The funeral service will start at 2pm followed by a cremation.
