Van Bronckhorst earns Rangers board backing over horrendous squad injury crisis

Rangers feel the injury situation facing Gio van Bronckhorst has earned him their patience – and there is no appetite at board level to sack the beleaguered boss for now.

Defeat to St Johnstone left them trailing rivals Celtic by seven points and that comes off the back of a historically poor Champions League campaign. Frustrations from supporters have been levelled at van Bronckhorst with fans vocally calling for him to "get to f***" at McDiarmid Park, while board members haven’t escaped criticism either.

Van Bronckhorst has struggled with a horrendous injury list of late – with 10 players out of the Ajax clash last week. The likes of Tom Lawrence and John Souttar – who were expected to be key players – have been absent for much of the season with injury, while Van Bronckhorst was also without key men such as Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack for the trip to Perth.

Record Sport understands that the board see the injury situation for what it is and feel it has been an extenuating factor behind Rangers ' poor results and performances under Van Bronckhorst. To put it simply, there is an understanding. To that end, there is no desire to sack him just yet with key games against Hearts and St Mirren coming before the World Cup break.

But there is nonetheless concern at how poor things have been and the hierarchy will be expecting a response to that defeat in Perth against the Jambos on Wednesday and in Paisley at the weekend. They will hope six points from those two games will be enough to ease fans' fury and sign off for the break on a high.
