Rangers 'in talks' over in-demand defender Ekdal as eight clubs chase loan

Rangers are reportedly in talks over a loan swoop for Burnley centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal.

It's reported the Ibrox club is among EIGHT sides keen to sign the defender in the January transfer window.

Ekdal, 26, is set to leave Burnley this month on loan with a host of potential suitors in contact over striking a loan agreement.

According to SportsExpressen journalist Anel Avdić, Rangers are holding talks with Burnley over a possible loan to the end of the season.

QPR, Stoke City and Middlesbrough are also thought to be in discussions with Burnley chiefs to try and land Ekdal on a temporary basis.

However, Burnley have also had significant interest in the Swedish stopper from Europe.

Groningen, Empoli, Sampdoria and Brescia have all reportedly contacted Burnley regarding the defender's status this month.

Addressing transfers this window, Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart said: “Just to be clear I've not said that we're not doing business but we'll only do business that's right for the long-term benefit of the club.

"A quick fix I just don't believe is the responsible thing for us to be doing as an executive team and for me to be doing as a CEO. The question of whether or not we do business is about both looking at the short-term impact but it's also going to have a long-term benefit as well.”

Pushed on how many players could join the club, Stewart said it would more likely be "one maybe two" than "three or four" with centre-back the priority position the club have already looking at since last month.
