Rangers icon Ally McCoist lands World Cup final co-commentary role as Argentina and Croatia clash sees him trend on Twitter

Rangers icon Ally McCoist has landed one of the best gigs in football after being selected to provide co-commentary on the 2022 World Cup final this weekend.

East Kilbride's famous son has been lauded in recent years for his punditry work, landing regular roles for some of the biggest games going in UK football and currently guests throughout the week on radio station TalkSport's Breakfast Show.

The 60-year-old continues to be a big hit with armchair fans and his analysis and insight from the global showpiece in Qatar this winter has only enhanced his reputation further - with the ex-Scotland striker even trending on Twitter for his latest performance.

Last night he was added to ITV's regular big game commentary team alongside lead commentator Sam Matterface and Arsenal hero Lee Dixon, as Lionel Messi helped Argentina book their place in Sunday's final with a 3-0 win over Croatia.

And McCoist's work went down a storm.

Argentina will now meet the winner of tonight's other semi-final between France and Morocco and ITV confirmed McCoist will be on their team for the final, which is a 3pm kick-off UK time.

At the end of the Argentina clash, ITV presenter Mark Pugach said: "Join us on Sunday from 1.30pm with our top team of Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Gary Neville and Eni Aluko plus Sam Matterface, Lee Dixon and Ally McCoist in the commentary booth."

Not bad for a boy from Calderwood in East Kilbride.
