Rangers hero tips Giovanni van Bronckhorst to stick with 'tried and tested' for Premiership clash

Barry Ferguson has tipped Giovanni van Bronckhorst to pick the same team that were defeated by Napoli in todays clash with Dundee United.

The Rangers legend has backed the ‘tried and tested’ formula to go again after showing plenty of ‘bite’ against the Italian giants on Wednesday. Questions were raised after none of the new summer signings featured in the side as Rangers faced up to the Serie A leaders. New recruit Ben Davies continued his time on the bench, with 18-year-old Leon King getting the nod when defender James Sands was sent off for a last ditch challenge on Giovanni Simeone. But Ferguson has urged Van Bronckhorst to stick with the same XI after being impressed by much of the Napoli display.

Rangers get back to league action today against Dundee United, as they bid to end a horror run of three defeats with an aggregate score line of 11 against and 0 scored. And Ferguson has tipped the experience of Scott Arfield, Ryan Kent, Allan McGregor and Alfredo Morelos to end the worst run of results since 2006.

Speaking on Go Radio, he told presenter Paul Cooney: “If it’s me (Paul) I’m playing that same starting XI against Dundee United." Speaking of the team on Wednesday, he added: "I was happy enough with that [starting XI], you know what you are going to get. That’s a group of players who have been over the course before. There is good experience in there, there is a bit of know how, Most of the team were involved in the brilliant run last year in the Europa League.”

Ferguson also assessed the new summer signings as he provided verdicts on Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence, Malik Tillman, Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz, whilst praising King as a future star.

He added: “Gio never picked any of his summer recruits, Ben Davies on the bench. He brought young Leon King on.

“He’s 18, but I think he’s got a brilliant career ahead of them, from what I’ve seen, he’s really impressed me.

“He’s brought him on stead of a £4m signing. Yilmaz, I’ve not seen too much of him. I’ve only seen him against in the Queen of the South game in the League Cup.

“Colak, at least he’s scored seven goals, he’s showed a bit of bite about him. Lawrence impressed me until he got injured.

“Then there is question marks over Matondo. Tillman as well up until the Celtic game showed a bit.

“There was always going to be questions asked but I thought the starting XI was the right one because they showed that in the performance, at least they had a real bite about them.”
