Rangers hero Ally McCoist quids in after James Tavernier Champions League bet

Ally McCoist lifts lid on extra reason to be happy at Rangers' Champions League progression

ALLY MCCOIST admitted he was quids in last night as he celebrated Rangers' win over Union Saint-Gilloise.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side overturned a 2-0 first leg deficit in the Champions League qualifier to progress 3-2 on aggregate.

James Tavernier, Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman were all on the scoresheet during the 3-0 victory.

While McCoist was naturally pleased that his former side had won - securing their progression to the play-off round - the former Ibrox player and manager revealed he had an extra reason to punch the air with joy.

The Gers legend placed a bet that Tavernier would be first goalscorer in the match, with the pundit getting the price at 8/1.

On Tuesday, McCoist told talkSPORT listeners that he fancied the skipper to bag first due to his impressive record in Europe. He was initially told that the odds were 13/2.

So McCoist was one "happy Scotsman" to have gotten even more generous odds on the bet.

He told the radio station this morning: "I mentioned it yesterday and got quoted 13/2. But I managed to do a bit better than that.

"I got Tavernier at 8s for first goalscorer, so this is quite a happy Scotsman here!"

Rangers will face PSV next week in the play-off round of the competition.

Having watched their highlights as they Dutch side beat Monaco, McCoist says they will be no pushovers.

He added: "If we do the business against PSV I guarantee he will be getting a message.

"I briefly watched the highlights of PSV last night, they are a good team, they deserved to go through against Monaco.

"With Cody Gakpo and Joey Veerman, I like him a lot. Veerman is the lad who Rangers were interested in a few years back.

"We could do with Manchester United continuing their interest in taking Gakpo.

"Its a tough one to call, it is two teams that wouldn't look out of place in the Champions League group stages - let's put it that way."
