Rangers handed Napoli Champions League warning as menacing 'cauldron of hatred' awaits Light Blues

Rangers hero Mark Hateley has warned his former club that an intense atmosphere awaits them on their travels to Napoli.

The Light Blues have kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 hammering against Ajax in Amsterdam but Hateley reckons that on paper, this was the easiest trip for manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst in Group A. They have still to play 2022 runners-up Liverpool at Anfield while he knows all about Napoli's Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Having played with AC Milan for three years during his playing days, the former striker knows how hard it can be to focus at the Serie A heavyweight's home patch. It will be something the Light Blues need to overcome and speaking ahead of the game in Amsterdam on BBC Sportsound, Hateley looked ahead to the rest of Rangers' Champions League group: "This is where you need to build on performances, it's not a knockout.

"You have to keep yourself in this competition from the word go. You don't want beat in your opening game and going into the second, you need to be in the competition.

"This is a completely different way of looking at a game of football. I think to play away from home, this (Ajax) will be the easiest place to play. You have Anfield.

"Then you go into Napoli, an absolute cauldron of...hatred. I've played there many times and it is the most hostile. That place is unbelievable."
