Rangers given transfer advice as they're told to seek 'Tierney money' off Calvin Bassey sale

Rangers have been told to do all they can to keep Calvin Bassey by former captain Barry Ferguson - but a fee of £25 million should be the asking price if a transfer draws nearer.

Scotland defender Kieran Tierney left Premiership rivals Celtic for Arsenal in a deal at that price almost three years ago and Rangers' ex-midfielder reckons that's what the Light Blues must demand. Bassey enjoyed a stellar campaign at Ibrox in term 2021/22 with standout performances in both Europa League and Scottish Cup finals. Keeping him must become a key priority for them this summer according to Ferguson.

The former midfielder told Go Radio: “I’d chain him up. Anything just to make sure he doesn’t leave. Last year I was in awe of him, I’ve got to be honest with you. Some of the performances he puts in and he’s still got a bit to learn, he’s still got a bit to go.

"He’s got everything you want as a modern day defender. He can play a number of positions, he can play left-back, he can play left wing-back and he can play left of a three or left of a two.

"If I was going to give him a bit of advice, he should stay and keep playing week-in and week-out because his chance will come if he wants to go down south to the Premier League, there’s no doubt about it.

"Rangers will be trying to tie him down on a long-term contract to get the best money for next season or the season after. You've got to be looking at Kieran Tierney money, £25million, you have to be looking at that."

There's plenty of talk of exits from Ibrox this summer, with Bassey's one name mentioned with Premier League clubs such as Aston Villa.

Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent are all in the final 12 months of their contracts with only defender John Souttar coming in so far.

Croatian striker Antonio Colak meanwhile is said to be in talks over a £1.8 million move as pre-season at Auchenhowie continues.
