Graham Alexander insists Motherwell would have beaten Rangers twice in the last year if VAR had been in operation, as he dismissed Gio Van Bronckhorst’s claims the video technology would have delivered victories for the Ibrox side.
The Motherwell boss saw his side fight back from 2-0 down against the champions on Sunday to claim a vital point in their top six push.
It was the second time this season the Steelmen had frustrated Rangers after a 1-1 draw there in September, where Fashion Sakala looked to be offside when he opened the scoring for Rangers. And last season a Cedric Itten goal at Fir Park salvaged a point for Rangers from an offside position in a 1-1 draw.
But Rangers were fuming with Motherwell's equaliser on Sunday, insisting the Steelmen's Celtic loanee Liam Shaw was offside in the build-up. The officials also ruled out two strikes from Alfredo Morelos for offside in the contest, one of which looked to have given Rangers a 3-2 win late on.
Asked if van Bronckhorst's statement "With VAR, we would have won this game" was fair, Alexander told the Daily Record: “No. I thought the decisions I saw on TV were right.
“Liam was offside about 35 seconds before we actually scored the equaliser.
“They had possession of the ball three times before that. It went out of the box, back in and it was the third phase after that we scored.
“Liam looked offside from the pass but 35 seconds before the goal I don’t think we are getting into that territory - VAR is about the immediate lead up to goals.
“Liam being offside didn’t have any significant part to play in the goal."
"If we had VAR in the last year we’d already have beaten them twice. That’s the reality."
