Rangers fantasists warned Asterisk Years claim is cuckoo as gloating Celtic punters offer helpline over Hotline

Celtic are closing in on the record Rangers trophy haul after wrapping up the Premiership title and targeting the Scottish Cup in a few weeks.

The Hoops could be just one piece of silverware behind the Ibrox club soon but Hotline caller Tom Vallance managed to wind up Parkhead punters with his claim they can’t count championships won when they were out the league. Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, hit back and said: “Another fantastic league triumph for Celtic, big Ange is right up there now. As for Asterisk Years, we can only beat the teams in front of us and we do.”

Sean Beech, Hampshire, said: “I see once more that when Rangers fans like Mr Vallance don’t like the facts they try to deflect the narrative with this Asterisk Years nonsense. Surely no one can be that delusional as to believe any league would make a footnote about a team's absence. Have the Rangers fans forgotten why they weren’t there?"

William Hutchison, Aberdeen, said: “Rangers fan bringing up that old chestnut again about titles won when they were not around. Is this going to get brought up every time Celtic win the title?

“The last two years Rangers were in the Premiership and we still won, so what's the excuse?” Lance Little, Erskine, said: “It’s the usual sour grapes at Celtic winning 11 out of the last 12 league titles with Covid messing with the other one. This team is light years ahead of his serial runners up team and will continue to improve every season.”

Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: “A special support line has been set up for Rangers fans to cry on. They can dial 0141 101010. That’s 0141 won nothing won nothing won nothing…”

Alex Cochrane’s red card against Celts on Sunday has made it into VAR Conspiracy Corner. Rab Hunter, Dumfries, said: “When Ange Postecoglou said he wanted to congratulate the boys I assume he was referring to Nick Walsh and Willie Collum. They have been instrumental throughout the season in ensuring continued success for Celtic and clearly decided to go out with a flourish at Tynecastle.”

Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: “It’s clear to see it was to reduce the dominant Jambos to 10 men as there was a danger they’d beat Celtic. The powers that he wouldn’t want the Glasgow side to have the chance of winning the league against Rangers at Ibrox.”

There were other video nasties over the weekend. Hugh McKirdy, via email, said: “Barry Robson was bang on asking where was VAR for the Goldson/Duk incident at Ibrox. That happens up the other end they'd fall over themselves to appease the home support.”

Ian Jardine, Brechin, said: “Fans pay good money to watch football and are being cheated and frustrated by nonsensical VAR decisions. VAR has been detrimental to the game and must be binned for next season.”

Gers are already looking to next season and Gordon Hendry, Ochiltree, said: “If all Michael Beale's summer signings turn out to be like Todd Cantwell then Rangers will have won a watch.

“Once young Raskin and Ianis Hagi get full pre-seasons under their belt there is no need to pay the asking price for Malik Tillman. We have an outstanding goalkeeper in Robbie McCrorie and an excellent full-back in Ridvan Yilmaz, all of which should set us up nicely for an extended run in Europe.”

But Jamie Thompson, Clydebank, said: Some of these Rangers players have really let this club and fans down. They took plaudits for 55 but since then these so-called big players have failed to deliver since.

“Ross Wilson should take responsibility for not selling Morelos and Kent at the end of last season and for some of players who should never have been signed."
