Rangers fans sent Amsterdam 'safety risk area' warning as mayor acts ahead of potential Ajax trouble

Mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema has declared the Johan Cruijff Arena and surrounding places a 'safety risk area' ahead of Ajax vs Rangers.

The call stems from troubled at last season's match between the Eredivisie champions and Benfica, where a large amount of pyrotechnics were set off. Supporters have been warned off wearing face covering clothing such as balaclavas, which can result in a six-month stadium ban.

Shopkeepers in the Red Light District in the city centre are temporarily not allowed to sell alcohol. The ban applies today (September 6th) from 6:00pm to 3:00am and on September 7th from 12:00pm to 12:00am. A statement reads: "The Johan Cruijff Arena and its surroundings have been designated as a safety risk area around the Ajax and Rangers football match. Anyone in this area can be subjected to a preventive search on Wednesday, September 7 from 3:00 to 11:00pm.

"Shopkeepers in the Red Light District are temporarily not allowed to sell alcohol on 6 and 7 September. The mayor of Amsterdam has taken these decisions in consultation with the Public Prosecution Service and the police.

"We take into account public disturbances and the setting off of heavy illegal fireworks, also because of the experiences with the last Champions League match against Benfica. These measures ensure a safer course of the race."

It's a big match for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his Rangers side as they look to mark their return to the Champions League with a positive scoreline.
