Celtic's defeat at St Mirren has some fans believing the veil of invincibility has fallen on Ange Postecoglou’s side. The champions lost their first league game in 364 days to St Mirren on Sunday and a few are now wondering if they are all that after all.
Knee-jerk reactions or a sign of things to come? James Smith, Falkirk, said: “It would seem that Celtic are not so mighty after all. What does that make the St Mirren team? Speaking to friends who are Celtic fans, they questioned the changes prior to the game. My local bookie was telling me about 8-0, 9-0 and 10-0 bets that were going on this weekend. Deluded or what?”
Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, emailed: “I read St Mirren goalscorer Mark O’Hara say the Buddies had shown everyone how to beat Celtic. I disagree, it’s not rocket science to already know that Celtic’s Achilles heel is their inability to defend high balls lofted into the box. That’s why Postecoqlou went all out to tie down Cameron Carter-Vickers. That’s why I found it strange that Christoper Jullien was allowed to leave and keeping Stephen Welsh instead seemed strange to me.”
Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: “As much as Celtic were poor on Sunday, there’s no panic here as no team can win forever. We will be back on it next league game and playing even better as we have too many good players in our team.”
Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill , said: “It is well known that Sir Rod Stewart is an avid reader of the Hotline. I would be interested in his comments on the Celtic supporters’ disgraceful behaviour in both Poland and Paisley.”
Sam Morton, Edinburgh, emailed: “Sports reporters and pundits have all been quick to criticise supporters of Dundee United and Celtic for their anti-Royal protests at the weekend. I hope that going forward they will be as quick to criticise the sectarian singing that we hear from the Old Firm fans on a weekly basis, or is that wishful thinking?”
Paul Conner emailed: “Celtic had to lose a league match sometime and it just goes to show we need a few more players to improve our squad, which we will. The Rangers supporters will be getting excited but UEFA won’t allow them to spend beyond their means again. Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent are working their tickets and they have a team of journeymen. The League title is in the bag.”
Phyllis Gray, Aberdeenshire, emailed: “I hope Steve Clarke picks Ryan Porteous in the next two games for Scotland. At least we will get a penalty and one of the opposing players sent off.”
Alan Lough, Dunbar, emailed: “Cristiano Ronaldo may be the top goal scorer of all time but Lionel Messi has just overtaken him for goals scored, not including penalties and that’s having played 150 games less in professional football. I know which achievement I would rather have to my name. Well done Messi, we will never see his likes again.”
