Rangers face Viktoria Plzen 'worst ever' shootout as unwanted Champions League tag looms ominously on final day

Rangers will need a result against Ajax next to avoid being branded the worst ever team in Champions League group stage history. But they have some competition for that tag as Viktoria Plzen could yet trump them in a race to the bottom.

As things stand, Dinamo Zagreb's dreadful 2011/12 campaign remains the worst the competition has ever seen. They finished with no points, three goals scored and 22 conceded for a goal difference of -19. But Gio van Bronckhorst 's team landed a nightmare group and five defeats on the spin - including Wednesday night's thumping against Napoli - leaves them within touching distance.

They've scored one, and conceded 19, leaving them on a goal difference of -18 - perilously close to joining or surpassing that infamous Zagreb side. A point against Ajax will of course see them avoid that unwanted fate, while they can still theoretically overturn the Amsterdam giants who have just three points to their name - though would need a miraculous five-goal win to do that.

If Rangers do finish the Champions League campaign pointless, though, there remains a scenario where they could be spared their blushes by Czech side Viktoria. Landing in a group with Bayern Munich, Inter and Barcelona, they've had a similarly disastrous campaign to Gers and are yet to pick up a point.

They've scored three and conceded 20 ahead of their final day showdown with Barca - who have been eliminated on four dreary points and cannot move from third place. Should the Catalan side deliver a thumping, they could also threaten Zagreb's record.
