Rangers expect to be given the go-ahead to play their Champions League clash with Napoli in Glasgow on Tuesday night.
But the Ibrox side are also preparing for it potentially being delayed 24 hours until Wednesday. UEFA have made no official announcement on their scheduled matches this week with five British clubs due to play at home in their respective European competitions. Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, all football in the UK was postponed over the weekend.
Rangers are confident their first home Group A game with the Italians will get the green light. Napoli are due to fly into Glasgow tomorrow so any late change would disrupt the Serie A side’s travel plans. But last night a final decision was still to be taken after consultation with UEFA and Police Scotland, with a switch to Wednesday night a possibility.
There were discussions about possibly reversing the tie and playing it in Naples but that option has now been ruled out. Clubs travelling outside the UK for European matches expect them to be played as scheduled.
Celtic head to Poland on Wednesday night to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, while Hearts are in Latvia against RFS in the Europa Conference League. Meanwhile, there remains a doubt as to whether the SPFL fixture card will resume next weekend.
The Queen’s funeral has been confirmed to take place next Monday so games could potentially be called off again as a mark of respect. But SPFL chiefs won’t make a final decision before taking guidance from the UK Government.
