Rangers compensation for Steven Gerrard revealed as Michael Beale adds to seven-figure fee

The fee which took Steven Gerrard from Rangers to Aston Villa last year has been unveiled in the club's accounts.

Annual accounts at Ibrox have displayed a healthy profit of £5.9million and doubling their turnover to £86.6m, the highest in their history. The run to the Europa League final has helped them in that regard while Nathan Patterson's sale to Everton in January 2022's window has also boosted the figure.

What has also been taken into account is the compensation figure which granted former manager Gerrard's departure for a crack at the English Premier League in Birmingham. It's been shown on page 11 of the report that the Villa Park paid £4.25m to Rangers to take the Liverpool legend back down the road, while adding 'We also charged £6.1m in non-recurring costs, which includes settlement of litigations and contract termination costs.' This is thought to be down to the backroom staff costs.

Key coaching figures like Michael Beale - now manager of QPR - and Gary McCallister also headed from Rangers to Aston Villa and that £6.1m figure would include the money raised from the termination of contracts.

It didn't work out for Gerrard though as he was given the axe earlier this season after a poor start to the this season.

His successor in Glasgow is also under mighty pressure, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst now seven points behind Celtic in the title race after a 2-1 defeat to St Johnstone.
