Rangers close in on Rabbi Matondo transfer as 'agreement in principle' reached for Schalke winger

Rabbi Matondo is closing in on a move to Rangers with the Schalke winger set to make the switch to the Scottish Premiership, according to a report.

'An agreement in principle' has been reached for Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men to snap up the Wales international, according to the Scottish Sun. The 21-year-old made the move to Germany in 2019 as part of a deal worth £11million but he now looks set to depart permanently after three years for a new challenge in Glasgow.

Matonda came through the ranks at Cardiff City and then Manchester City before making his move to the Bundesliga outfit. During his stint in Germany he enjoyed two loan spells with Stoke City and Cercle Brugge.

The latter proved to be very successful with the winger scoring 10 goals and providing two assists in 27 appearances in all competitions. Van Bronckhorst has been vocal in his transfer plans this summer after expressing a desire to add at least two more faces this summer.

Matonda would become the fourth signing to pitch up at Rangers following the arrivals of John Souttar on a pre-contract from Hearts and the double signing of Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence this week. A number of English clubs have reportedly been tracking the 11-times capped Wales international this summer, but it’s understood Rangers are hopeful of concluding a deal.

The Dutchman said: “We are still busy. I think a couple more, yes. We need to be successful throughout the whole season.

"You saw last season that we were lacking a little bit of depth up front with the strikers that we lost. I don’t want to come into another situation where I have to play someone like Joe Aribo as a striker.

“We just need to be prepared for everything that can happen to this club and still have quality. More in the attacking positions is the aim.”
