Rangers captain James Tavernier surprises kids at Castlemilk community football pitch

Budding young footballers in Castlemilk had a surprise visit from a Rangers star this week.

Rangers captain James Tavernier stopped by Barlia Football Centre in Castlemilk on Friday where local kids were enjoying Free Play during the school holidays.

The footballer took time out of his day to chat and take photos with young players ahead of his match against St. Mirren this afternoon.

Castlemilk Community Football Trust shared pictures of the footballer interacting with the youngsters on social media.

They said: "We had a surprise visit today from Rangers captain, James Tavernier who happily spent time getting photos with kids who were at Barlia for Free Play today.

"All the kids no matter their team behaved respectfully and now have something to tell their schoolmates next week.

"Safe to say he was impressed that we open the gates to provide free access for local kids to kick a ball during the school holidays."

The Trust has been running free activities throughout the school holidays to reduce costs for parents over the school holidays and provide a safe space for local youngsters.

Thanks to Glasgow City Council funding and local food action group Castlemilk Together, some sessions also include lunches, providing a much-needed service for local families.

In order to keep their services going, and following their recent funding bid rejections, they were forced to ask for donations to help towards their costs.

The group has run their Friday night free football for young people for the last decade and is now calling for donations and benefactors to help to keep it going.
