Rangers captain distracted by summer transfer talk, according to Ibrox icon

Rangers captain James Tavernier was sensationally dropped by manager Philippe Clement last time out.

Sections of the Light Blues support had been calling for the experienced right-back to be replaced for a significant period of time, yet Tavernier was always a mainstay on the team sheet.

However, as Rangers lined up for their Europa League tie against Olympiacos on Thursday night, their skipper sat on the substitutes bench.

During the summer, the 33-year-old was linked with a transfer exit to both Saudi Arabia and Turkey but nothing ever materialised.

And that’s something Rangers icon Derek Ferguson thinks could play a factor in the drop in performances from the defender this season.

Speaking on the Open Goal Podcast, Ferguson said: “There can be a bit of everything as well.

“He’s maybe lost a wee bit in terms of his legs, has his head been swayed a wee bit as there were maybe offers somewhere else that didn’t materialise.

“He’s never been a good defender, but what he’s made up for is his stats in terms of his deliveries, in terms of setting up goals for people and his goals. He’s not delivering that any more.”
