Rangers boss references Pep Guardiola, insists 'not one manager has guarantees'

Rangers manager Philippe Clement knows there's no guarantees that he will keep his job long-term as he addressed the increased noise around his position following last weekend's shock Scottish Cup defeat at home to Queen's Park.

Clement revealed discussions with CEO Patrick Stewart had taken place after Rangers’ disappointing fifth-round exit, emphasising the need for a strong response in their upcoming fixtures.

The Belgian acknowledged the inherent uncertainties in football management while demanding a determined reaction from his squad on Sunday as they aim to bounce back from their cup disappointment when they visit Hearts in Scottish Premiership action.

"Not one manager in the world has guarantees, maybe [Pep] Guardiola in Man City, but he deserves that after all the things he did in a long spell there," said Clement.

"But we spoke about the game and that the result didn't reflect the game. But, of course, we need to react, and that's the most important thing after a defeat, an unacceptable defeat hoping out of the cup. It's something we are all devastated about and sick about. That's been the case the first days of the week for all of us.

"You need to react now. That's the important thing.

"I'm not busy with [fan noise] because there's a lot of people here in the club who are all over the world, I'm in contact with Patrick and we had a talk over the game after the game like we always do, and it was in the same way as before.

"And of course, I was also frustrated and devastated after the result. I was frustrated to be on the sideline during that game. You get that amount of chances and at one moment you want to run on the field and shoot the ball yourself into the goal. But that's not my job to do.

"So, it's about picking up the team again. To be clear about the amount of mistakes we made, and we made a big review about this game to take the right conclusions then to work towards the next game."

Asked to elaborate on his talks with Rangers' newly-appointed CEO, Clement stated: "It was about the game and about the fans. I said myself, of course this is a big blow for the fans, it's the same for us. We wanted to go far in the cup. We had bad feelings after the League Cup when we went into the final, now this cup was a really big goal for us and for me. It's also something I talked about a lot with the group during the last weeks and months.

"It was a big blow for all of us. I know it was a big blow for all the fans to get that result against a team who is playing in the second league. It's not acceptable, it's unacceptable like I said after the game."
