Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst says penalties defeat to Frankfurt 'hurts' as focus now turns to Hearts in Scottish Cup

Giovanni van Bronckhorst admits Rangers' defeat to Frankfurt on penalties hurts.

The Light Blues went all the way before losing out in the cruellest of fashion as Aaron Ramsey missed his spot-kick in the shootout.

Joe Aribo had sent the Rangers fans into dreamland in Seville after opening the scoring but Rafael Santos Borré quickly levelled things up to force extra-time.

The teams couldn't be split in the additional 30 minutes, with Kevin Trapp denying Ryan Kent in the final moments with an outstanding save.

It was then to the lottery of spot-kicks and it was the Bundesliga side who triumphed.

Speaking following the defeat, the Rangers boss said: "Of course, I'm very disappointed because you play the final, you're very close to winning silverware.

"When you don't win, the emotions go from possibly high to very low - I've had those moments in my career, losing big games, losing the World Cup Final - it hurts.

"For us it's now to look ahead and although it feels a little bit difficult - we have to make sure we are ready for Saturday, a big game again against Hearts for the Cup.

"We came so far, we deserved it so I'm very proud of them because we had challenges with injuries and a lot of games to be played but we always gave everything.

"We had our chances, a big chance just before time with Ryan (Kent), a great save and then of course with penalties it's a lottery and we were not on the right side.

"We knew they would be dangerous with crosses, I haven't seen the goal back but of course to be 1-0 up you have to make sure you keep the zero because then you will get stronger.

"The goal we gave was a little bit too fast, from a cross, we knew that they would be dangerous and they had the first contact in the box.

"Then it was 1-1 and we had to start again."

Looking to the future, the Rangers boss added: "Next season, we have to start all over again, we came so far because we played well and had the belief to win the final but next year it starts all over again

"It's not certain we'll be on this level but we're going to work hard and make sure we develop as a team.

"We want to be on this stage, so next year we have to do it again - we start from zero and we'll work hard to get silverware next season."
