Rangers become worst-ever Champions League group stage side with Ajax defeat

RANGERS have officially become the worst-ever Champions League group stage performers after a dire campaign.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side suffered six straight defeats in the group stage at the hands of Napoli, Liverpool and Ajax.

The Ibrox side finished with no points from their six outings on their return to the European top table.

And, the pointless group stage showing will go down in history as the worst-ever by any team in the Champions League.

Rangers earned the unwanted record as they finished with a minus 20 goal difference.

Van Bronckhorst's men managed just one goal - against Liverpool at Ibrox - as they conceded 22 in the six-match group stage.

The goal difference exceeds previous record-holders Dinamo Zagreb who finished with no points and minus 19 in the goal difference tally.

There was faint hope that Viktoria Plzen would break the nightmare record instead of Rangers as they finished without a point.

However, despite a 4-2 loss to Barcelona, Plzen finished at -19 with five goals scored and 24 against in their group stage.

Rangers' Champions League group stage results

Ajax 4 Rangers 0

Rangers 0 Napoli 3

Liverpool 2 Rangers 0

Rangers 1 Liverpool 7

Napoli 3 Rangers 0

Rangers 1 Ajax 3
