Rangers and Celtic ultras clash with police as shoppers cower in doorway

Rangers ultras have been filmed running down a busy Glasgow street wearing Santa hats as they clashed with balaclava-clad Celtic supporters and the police.

The shocking scenes, apparently filmed on Argyll Street on the morning of the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park, left shocked onlookers forced to take refuge in doorways as shop staff were forced to lock the front doors of their premises.

A concerned woman can be heard urging shoppers to come inside, saying: "Oh my god. Get in!" as the chaos unfolding in front of the women left them screaming in shock.

A clip of the incident shared online shows police struggling to deal with the large presence of football supporters, appearing to primarily involve the Union Bears and the Green Brigade, plus a group of shoppers, who were caught up in the disturbing scene.

A flare was lit by a fan as the police attempted to control the disorder with batons. One police officer can be heard urging fans repeatedly to "Get back!"

However, many chose to refuse the orders as clashes continued.

Celtic will face Rangers at Hampden Park in the final of the Scottish League Cup at 3.30pm today.

Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan said: “We have dealt with a number of incidents in Glasgow city centre today involving individuals engaging in disorder and violence across the city.

"Officers have had to act swiftly and robustly to ensure public safety and reduce disorder. The use of weapons or violence will not be tolerated and officers will take action where necessary to ensure safety.

"It impacts other members of the public and the vast majority of football supporters who want to enjoy the cup final event safely. Officers will remain in the city as our operation continues and anyone with any concerns can approach them."
