Rangers and Celtic to take part in silence and wear black armbands in tribute to the Queen

Rangers and Celtic will take part in a moment of silence and wear black armbands in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II ahead of their Champions League clashes on Wednesday night.

The UK's longest-serving monarch died at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon, aged 96 after reigning for 70 years. Last weekend's SPFL fixture card was postponed as mark of respect, while clubs up and down the country paid tribute online and sent condolences to the Royal Family and everyone else mourning.

Rangers were due to face Napoli at Ibrox tonight but the match was pushed back 24 hours with both sides of the Old Firm now playing on Wednesday night. Ange Postecoglou and his Celtic side face Shakhtar Donestk in Poland while the LIght Blues welcome the Serie A outfit to Glasgow. The Hoops are first up in action at 5.45pm and as an away side UEFA have confirmed they will take part in a pre-match silence and wear black armbands. The same applies to all UK teams playing away from home.

Rangers are at home and they will do the same as Celtic but there was also be no Champions League anthem, pitch banner and arch or centre-circle ceremony at Ibrox.

There will also only be home fans present as Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men bid to get points on the board and put their defeats in the Old Firm and against Ajax behind them.

A UEFA statement reads: "In commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the following will take place for matches involving UK teams as the home team during the pre-match ceremony: No centre-circle/pitch banners/arch, No UEFA Champions League anthem, Moment of silence/black armbands, No pre-match sponsor activations/player mascots.

"Additionally, the following will take place for matches involving UK teams as the away team during the pre-match ceremony: Moment of silence/black armbands."
