Rangers and Celtic patter merchants unleash new joke book as James Tavernier and Scott Brown get it tight - Hotline

So VAR so good for Rangers in Europe this season but the Ibrox support are longing for the day TV technology is introduced into Scottish football.

UEFA’s officials were able to hit the rewind button on a string of big decisions during last week’s win over Red Star Belgrade and that’s convinced the Gers faithful it’s time for our whistlers to be given the right to replay key incidents.

Joe Smith, Coleraine was first up as he said: “Anyone against implementing VAR into the SPFL are cheats and have an ulterior motive for not wanting contentious decisions reviewed. All the decisions on Thursday night were spot on, something you wouldn't see in Scotland.”

Chris Lowe, Yoker , added: “We must get rid of the bowling club style voting system that exists in Scottish football to push through VAR.

“Every top league has it but giving 40-odd clubs a vote on it when probably 25 of them have no chance of ever playing in the top league sums up our game and the mismanagement that governs it.

“VAR will stop officials being terrified of Celtic and flush out a certain linesman’s odd decision making.”

Mark McGill, Glasgow, said: “Henry Moffat should go to Specsavers after making a ridiculous comment claiming Ryan Kent is a diver when you can see he was tripped. And many of his fellow fans who claim the Red Star Belgrade goals were onside and Allan McGregor was off his line to save that penalty should also be booking an appointment to get their eyes tested.

“Don’t be surprised if next they claim Leon Balogun’s goal should be chopped off because he left the field of play when he jumped up to header his goal!”

Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, emailed: “Rangers are that hot in the Europa league not even Strathclyde Fire Brigade could put them out, never mind red star Belgrade. With Rangers playing with their new signing VAR they are favourites to win the Europa League!”

But Celtic fan Gordon Ashley, Ayr , was stunned Kent’s penalty award was allowed to stand.

He said: “Caller Henry Moffat hit the nail on the heat with his Ryan Kent ‘flick kick trick’ comment. Officials down south have wisened up to Raheem Sterling pulling the exact same stunt of deliberately kicking players legs and falling down. Kent has got away with it too many times and our refs must follow the English and clamp down.”

Tam Williamson, Lanarkshire, said: “It's obvious that James Tavernier had been doing a pub crawl to his local taverns in order to celebrate the birth of the new addition to his family and still suffering from a hangover when he made the ludicrous statement about Rangers winning the Europa League.

“Red Star should be renamed Red Neck as their display was shocking - although they were cheated by Kent's dive.

“Red Star reminded me of Newtongrange Star but I still fancy them to qualify!”

Saturday’s caller Willie Mercer , who claimed the Hoops have “achieved nothing in the modern era of European football”, drew a swift rebuke from Brian McColligan.

He said: “Just to remind your Saturday caller that I’ll take quality over quantity any day.

“When Celtic won the European Cup, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia where three countries that nowadays have splintered into nearly 20, so you had to play the elite from these countries, therefore better quality teams.”

Record Sport revealed last week that Brendan Rodgers was preparing to offer Scott Brown a quick-fire return to the game with an invite to join him at Leicester.

And Jake Curley said: “Congratulations to Scott Brown. The Leicester players will now know how to get off with yellow card offences, never get red cards and never have go in front of the FA. Brendan, that’s simply genius.”
