The Los Angeles Rams more or less sat out the first wave of free agency this offseason. They were even idle during the second wave. In the last three weeks, however, they’ve begun to make some outside additions beyond just undrafted rookies and waiver claims.
In less than a month, the Rams added three veterans: wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Tyler Johnson, as well as running back Sony Michel. They all have one thing in common, too. They’re offensive skill players who will do nothing to help a defense that’s sorely in need of some proven talent.
On paper, the Rams defense is projected to be one of the weakest in the NFL. Only Aaron Donald, Ernest Jones and Jordan Fuller have been full-time starters, leaving a host of unproven players on rookie contracts to fill out the rest of the defense.
It’s obvious the Rams aren’t going to pursue a big name on either side of the ball or make a big splash in free agency, but there are still players available who can improve the defense without breaking the bank.
What’s puzzling is the fact that the Rams have yet to make a notable addition on defense (no offense to Vincent Gray). Will they do so at all this offseason? Or will they simply roll into Week 1 with their current defense?
It’s not an issue of cap space because Los Angeles freed up $10.44 million by restructuring Cooper Kupp’s contract. They have the money to spend. They’d just rather not use it.
There’s still a month before training camp so it’s possible Les Snead and Sean McVay will identify a defender who can help at a reasonable cost. John Johnson, Justin Houston, Melvin Ingram and Troy Hill are all veterans capable of earning starting jobs on the Rams’ roster without blowing up the team’s cap situation.
If Los Angeles is willing to pay for offensive players who may not even make the 53-man roster – it’s possible Robinson, Johnson and Michel will all be cut in September – why not take a shot on a defender who can fill an actual void at a position such as cornerback, edge rusher or safety?
