Rams are ‘in progress’ on extension for Aaron Donald

The Los Angeles Rams haven’t done much to add outside talent this offseason, but they have been hard at work re-signing many of their own players. They already extended Matthew Stafford and brought back Joseph Noteboom, Brian Allen, Coleman Shelton and Brandon Powell, so their attention has now turned to Aaron Donald.

The team has been in contact with Donald’s camp about a new contract, ensuring that the three-time Defensive Player of the Year is back in 2022. Les Snead told reporters on Tuesday that they’re “in progress” on that front, but Donald has told the Rams that he would like to be back next season.

“We definitely have chatted with Aaron, his representation, and we’re trying to come up with a win-win solution to reward Aaron but still definitely be able to continue trying to compete as a team at the highest level,” Snead said, via the Los Angeles Daily News. “So, we’re in progress there.”

“I know Aaron’s articulated to us that he would like to be back, and he would definitely like to continue to try to do special things not only as an individual player but as a team.”

With Stafford’s extension, the Rams were actually able to lower his cap hit this year, saving $9.5 million in cap space. They could potentially do the same with Donald, which would help them sign outside free agents and bring back a player such as Odell Beckham Jr.

Currently, Donald has the biggest cap hit on the team at $26.75 million. He’s worth every penny of that amount, but lowering it with an extension would benefit the Rams as they try to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
