A teenager who allegedly ignored his positive COVID test result and went clubbing in Adelaide has appeared in court for the first time.

Ralph MacIntosh, 19, was charged late last year with failing to comply with South Australia's emergency management rules.

It is alleged he tested positive to COVID-19 on December 17 but proceeded to spend several hours at the Loverboy nightclub on Hindley Street in Adelaide's CBD.

In a brief hearing at the Adelaide Magistrates Court, defence lawyer Stephen Ey said he was seeking further information.

"We're exercising our legal right to investigate the matter, we have nothing more to say," he told reporters outside.

"We're investigating the matter, we'll assess the evidence … that's his legal entitlement."

Mr MacIntosh did not answer questions from the media pack.

He attended court with his parents and will be required to return in April.

At the time, Premier Steven Marshall described the incident as "very serious allegations".

"If they're correct, I think this serves as a lesson to every single South Australian that they've got to abide by these restrictions, otherwise there are very heavy penalties," he said.

If convicted, Mr MacIntosh could face a fine of up to $20,000, or a two-year jail sentence.

SA Health ordered patrons who were at the nightclub at the same time into quarantine.
