Ralph Hasenhuttl hits out at officiating in Southampton loss to Manchester United

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl believes his side should have been awarded a penalty in their defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.

United picked up back-to-back wins for the first time under Erik ten Hag as Bruno Fernandes struck the only goal of the game at St. Mary's Stadium.

The Portuguese's composed finish proved to be the decisive moment in a close-fought match in which both sides largely cancelled each other out.

It could have been a different story, however, had the home side been awarded a penalty when midfielder Scott McTominay handled the ball in his own area an hour into the match.

The ball clearly struck the Scotland international on both arms as he challenged Che Adams for possession, but he went unpunished given there was a lack of intention behind his actions.

Speaking after the defeat, Hasenhuttl bemoaned the decision and questioned what more needed to be done for them to be awarded a spot-kick this season.

"Not one handball, three," he told reporters at full-time. "It went from the left hand, to the right hand and to the left hand again. We had a situation against Leicester where there was a hand ball in the box too. We’re still waiting for our first penalty."

When asked what he made of his side's performance, the Southampton boss explained why his side deserved to get something from the game.

He added: "I think the performance was very good. We didn’t have a single player in the team where I can say I'm not happy about his performance and this shows you after the game that you did a good job out there. With the quality, with the weapons we have to stress them, I think we did it in a good way.

"We had a lot of chances created today and didn't give them a lot. So from this part, I think we matched them."
