Ralf Rangnick told to find way to fit Cristiano Ronaldo into his tactics at Manchester United

Ralf Rangnick has been told he must play Cristiano Ronaldo, and find a way to make it work for Manchester United.

The interim manager’s relationship with the Portuguese superstar is once again in headlines after Ronaldo reacted angrily to being substituted against Brentford on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old made his return to the side after missing the previous two games against Aston Villa in the league and FA Cup, but was brought off with 20 minutes remaining with United 2-0 up in London.

Ronaldo was clearly unhappy with the decision as he threw down his coat in anger before Rangnick was seen explaining the change to him, with the German insisting the situation was “normal” afterwards.

Ronaldo’s place in United’s side though has been under constant scrutiny this season, particularly following the arrival of Rangnick, with some questioning his suitability for the former RB Leipzig boss’ high pressing style.

The ex-Real Madrid ace though has received backing from some of his old team-mates, with former midfielder Kleberson the latest to throw his weight behind the Portuguese.

“Ralf Rangnick feels forced to play Cristiano Ronaldo sometimes, despite playing a high pressing, counter-attacking style,” Kleberson told Paddy Power.

“One thing Ralf probably thinks about before games is Cristiano Ronaldo’s age.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a player that has to play wherever he goes. The problem is though, is with the new manager – Rangnick and the pressing football he wants to play. Ralf really emphasises that, and it’s not something Cristiano Ronaldo does.

“It’s a hard one though with Cristiano Ronaldo. He is back at Manchester United and simply has to play. It’s tough for a manager to take him out, but it’s ultimately their decision. Ralf must find a way to bring Ronaldo in that works with his tactics.”
