Ralf Rangnick tells Erik ten Hag how Manchester United can help underrated Fred thrive

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has advised Erik ten Hag on how to help Fred thrive at Manchester United. The Brazilian has been a much-improved performer under Rangnick and made his 100th appearance in the Premier League during the draw with Leicester.

Next up for Fred and his United teammates is a lunchtime trip to relegation-threatened Everton. With a spot in the Champions League still up for grabs, the Old Trafford giants also have one eye on next season - as Ajax manager Ten Hag prepares to take over on a permanent basis.

Key figures in the boardroom insist any appointment has yet to be finalised, but Ajax expect the highly-rated manager to touch down in the UK. Manchester Evening News revealed three weeks ago that he was a preferred candidate to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As for Fred, meanwhile, four goals and five assists so far this season marks his best Premier League return. It has underlined his worth to the United squad at a time when central midfield signings are set to be the priority when the transfer window reopens this summer.

During an interview with MUFC media, Rangnick said: "He's the type of player that if you want to play a proactive style of football then he has a lot of assets that you need. He's always trying to win balls and is always on the front foot.

"He's one of the most underestimated players in possession of the ball. He can score goals, give assists - and that's why he's also playing so regularly for Brazil. I'm not surprised at his development."
