Ralf Rangnick's new Marcus Rashford role could create a long-term issue at Manchester United

Manchester United have just embarked on arguably their most positive week since Ralf Rangnick became the club's interim manager, with back-to-back victories showing progression under the German.

On Saturday, the 1-0 victory over West Ham United meant that United climbed into fourth and in a Champions League spot, which can only be viewed as progression, considering what he inherited.

United now faces a two-week winter break, which means they can train to take that step further. However, there's already been some new developments around the team, which might have surprised a few people.

One of the developments has circulated Marcus Rashford, and before the Brentford and West Ham matches, he was receiving a lot of criticism because he looked far from the player we all know he is.

United's 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the FA Cup was perhaps one of the most worrying performances in Rashford's career so far. He looked off the pace, lacking in confidence, afraid to take people on and fans were concerned he was going to spiral on a downward trajectory.

There was one moment in that match that epitomised his fortunes at the time. Mason Greenwood had a shot on goal, which Emiliano Martinez fumbled and Rashford could've easily retrieved the ball to fire it past him. Instead, he didn't move and was static on the pitch.

It resulted in the 24-year-old being benched by Rangnick for the Brentford game and looking back on it, this proved to be the right decision as United won 3-1 and Rashford came off the bench to score the third goal.

Rangnick with this decision for the West Ham game and as we approached the final whistle, it looked like this was backfiring. But in the 62nd minute, he brought him on for Anthony Elanga, which proved to be a turning point.

With the last kick of the game, Rashford scored to seal the three points for United. This raised questions about his new role within the team because his match-winning goal against the Hammers means that he's now scored more winning goals (four) in the Premier League beyond the 90th minute than anyone else.

Supporters have now started to consider whether Rashford is more effective coming off the bench rather than starting in matches. He's an excellent person to bring on because he possesses pace and trickery, two traits that you wouldn't want to come up against in the 70th minute.

Considering the form of Anthony Elanga and the potential return of Jadon Sancho, it might even be wise to keep Rashford on the bench, but that could also create a long-term problem for United.

At 24, Rashford is at an age where he needs to be playing as much as possible, and if he occupies the role of a super-sub, he may not like that. This could lead to potential long-term questions over his future at United because he will want to be a regular starter for the team he has supported since he was a child.

The next manager of United may view Rashford as a starter, and his current status could even be a temporary solution due to his poor form over the last month. But if Rangnick persists with keeping him on the bench, I wouldn't bet against him being unhappy, considering he started pretty much every game under Solskjaer.

It remains to be seen whether this will change, but if it doesn't, it's certainly something to keep an eye on.
