Ralf Rangnick reveals six transfer targets he identified at Manchester United

Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangick has revealed that he compiled a transfer shortlist including six names during his tenure at Old Trafford.

Rangnick, who is now in charge of the Austrian national team, was installed as the club's interim manager at the end of November last year, replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a deal until the end of the season. He was expected to stay at the club beyond his time in the dugout and take up a consultancy position, supporting new manager Erik ten Hag.

However, less than a week after Ten Hag arrived in Manchester and held his maiden press conference as United manager, Rangnick left the club. Although United never revealed the specifics of what Rangnick's consultancy position would have involved, there was a general feeling that he would have had a say in the direction of their recruitment.

The experienced German had established himself as something of a recruitment expert during his time in the Red Bull franchise, working for both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg. But he never got the chance to try and improve United's recruitment, leaving the club before the summer transfer window had opened.

However, he has admitted that discussions were held about potential transfer targets, naming six players that he wanted to try and bring to Old Trafford, including Erling Haaland and RB Leipzig sensation Christopher Nkunku, as previously revealed by the MEN.

"There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club," Rangnick said, speaking to German outlet BILD. "But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.

"That's why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic.

"We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Erling Haaland when they were still on the market. But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach."

Rangnick was often critical about United's recruitment in recent years during his time in interim charge. He frequently highlighted mistakes that had been made and exposed the Glazers' errors.
