Ralf Rangnick makes proposal to Erik ten Hag as he prepares to hand over Man Utd reins

Ralf Rangnick wants to set up a meeting with Erik ten Hag when he arrives at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag will formally succeed Rangnick as Manchester United manager this summer after winning six trophies at Ajax, including this season's Eredivisie title. The Dutchman left his position in Amsterdam on Sunday and will start work at United on Monday - although he will not be in charge for their final Premier League game against Crystal Palace.

Rangnick has endured a difficult spell in charge of the Red Devils since succeeding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November. He's has failed to win a trophy at Old Trafford or qualify for next season's Champions League. They will finish either sixth or seventh this term.

Yet the German will continue to play a role in United's future. He will start a two-year consultancy gig this summer, despite agreeing to become the next manager of Austria in June - signing a two-year contract with the national side last month.

And, as reported by The Times, Rangnick wants to set up a meeting after United's final game against Palace at Selhurst Park. Regardless of the result on Sunday, the club will finish with their lowest ever Premier League points total.

The outgoing boss is expected to provide a merciless assessment of United's squad. It's claimed Rangnick believes the playing staff 'lack the right levels of physicality and personality' needed to end the club's wait for silverware. Their last honour came in 2017.

There's no guarantee Ten Hag will listen to Rangnick's proposals, although he would be a fool to ignore him. The German has spent the last six months working with the underperforming squad, which boasts the highest wage bill in the Premier League.

Ten Hag wasn't initially expected to start work at United until next month but is eager to get ahead of the game. "I am switching very rapidly, yes," recently said Ten Hag. "But is it really necessary, because a lot of things need to be dealt with."

The 52-year-old added: "I have the energy to carry on after the Dutch season with a new period in Manchester. I am looking forward to dealing with things. Of course I need to charge my batteries at some stage, but I will find time for that somewhere in between."

As exclusively revealed by Mirror Football earlier this month, Ten Hag has ordered United's flops to report back for pre-season training two weeks early. He's hoping an extra fortnight of rigorous fitness work will get the team in shape ahead of the new season.

The players are now expected to report back for duty on June 20, less than a month after the Premier League season concludes. Ten Hag is also believed to have completed one-to-one meetings with every member of the playing squad in recent days via Zoom.

Gary Neville highlighted the squad's poor work rate in October. " Manchester City and Liverpool players work like dogs, like non-league players... so why won’t United players work as hard?" questioned the club legend after the 4-2 away defeat to Leicester.
