Ralf Rangnick issues clear warning to Man Utd stars following Southampton failure

Ralf Rangnick told his Manchester United that they have to get nasty after they were booed off at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils dropped two vital points in their bid for the top four after Che Adams cancelled out Jadon Sancho’s first-half opener with a quality strike for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

United legend Paul Scholes insisted afterwards that United’s players aren’t prepared to run for the cause.

Rangnick hit back at Scholes’ assessment - but admitted his team have to find a mean streak.

He said: “The question isn’t about how much we run.

“It is about how we can get more compact, more aggressive - and even more nasty when we are defending a lead.

“I know what Paul Scholes said - and I don’t think the players are unwilling to run.

“But it’s about the type of players we have and how they want to play.

“Our team has never been a pressing team and to change those habits in a couple of weeks without a pre-season doesn’t happen like that.

“But no-one should believe that the players don’t care or like to experience things like today.

“They’re not happy giving away points - and it’s the third game when we’ve been 1-0 or 2-0 up and we haven’t taken full points.”

United remain in fifth and are a massive 20 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves all have games in hand over Rangnick’s misfiring team.

Scholes was scathing after another disappointing draw, just three days after Burnley hit back to snatch a point at Turf Moor.

Paul Scholes slammed Manchester United's performance against Southampton (@btsportfootball / Twitter)

Scholes said: “From what I saw, I don't think they're working hard enough to stop the other team playing football.

“You look at the team-sheet and there's a lot of talent in that team. You can name every one of them.

“But even with talent you have to work hard as well.

“I feel sorry for the manager because he's clearly trying his best to set his team up.

“And they're either not listening and can't do it or don't want to do it.

“We don't know what's gone on in the training field, we don't know the attitude of the players.

“They're either not taking instructions - or they don't want to.”
