Ralf Rangnick given short shrift by referee in post-match chat over Bruno Fernandes tackle

Ralf Rangnick has revealed that referee Paul Tierney gave him a short shrift when he enquired about a controversial decision in Manchester United 's dramatic 4-2 win at Leeds on Sunday.

The Red Devils interim manager quizzed Tierney after United star Bruno Fernandes was aggressively dispossessed by Adam Forshaw for the hosts' equaliser in the second half.

As the referee allowed play to continue, Daniel James picked up the ball and found Raphinha to make it 2-2, with VAR soon agreeing that there was no foul.

While his players protested during the game, Rangnick waited until after the final whistle to probe Tierney but was met with a rebuke.

"For me, as somebody coming from Germany, there were quite a few tackles that in Germany there would've been no discussion whatsoever," the acclaimed German coach explained post-match.

"I spoke to the referee after the game about that tackle on Bruno before they scored the equaliser and I said, 'listen, in Germany, they wouldn't have even asked VAR' and the referee said to me, quite funnily, 'listen, this is probably why you had to come to England'."

Despite their fury at the decision, Rangnick and co ultimately left Elland Road with three points.

Leeds' two goals came inside as many minutes early in the second period, with Rodrigo's mis-hit cross beating David de Gea before Raphinha's tap-in levelled the scores after an opening 45 which saw the Red Devils dominate.

But substitutes Fred and Anthony Elanga regained the lead for United in the closing stages, ensuring that Harry Maguire and Fernandes' first-half goals were part of a victory.

"We showed maturity. We were rising our level of aggression towards what we had to play here in this atmosphere," Rangnick added.

"[The win] was great for everybody in the club, for supporters, for the players, for us, we knew that we had to win, even more so after yesterday's results.

"Let's keep it going.I hope this experience today will also give us additional energy for the Champions League and upcoming games in the Premier League."

While his side visit Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their round-of-16 clash in the Champions League on Wednesday, Rangnick led the Red Devils back to fourth place with the win - although they could still be overtaken if Arsenal win their games in hand.

"We know that [we need to win]," he affirmed. "It will not change for the rest of the season. We have to get as many points as we possibly can and that was one of those games that we had to win."
