Ralf Rangnick forced to deliver half-time reminder to Man Utd stars in Brighton win

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick was forced to read his flops the riot act during Tuesday night's win over Brighton.

United crawler their way back into the Champions League spots after a hard-fought win over Graham Potter's side.

The Red Devils were booed off at half time after a dismal opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford, which saw them fail to create any meaningful chances.

Chants of "Attack! Attack! Attack!" were bellowed out by the Stratford end as Brighton enjoyed the majority of the ball.

And it seems that sentiment was echoed by Rangnick during the interval, as David de Gea admitted post-game.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Spanish goalkeeper revealed the interim head coach hadn't masked his upset with their performance.

De Gea said: "The message [at half-time] was that we are playing at home and we pressed high in the second half.

"We controlled the game after the red card and there was a five minute spell when they came back."

De Gea was credited with keeping United in the game at numerous points on Tuesday night.

The goalkeeper produced an array of fine saves to deny the Seagulls, as he has been forced to do on a number of occasions this season.

In the end, Cristiano Ronaldo produced a moment of individual brilliance to open the scoring just minutes before Lewis Dunk was sent off.

The Portuguese icon drifted in from the left flank and drilled a shot into the top corner five minutes into the second half.

Bruno Fernandes killed the game off with one of the last kicks of the match as he fired into the top corner from close range.

The win takes United back into the top four spots, two points ahead of fifth-placed West Ham. Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves remain in the hunt and have games in hand.

But De Gea believes United should be aiming higher than simply finishing in the top four. He said: "We should be fighting for more things than the top four, but that is the reality.

"There are many teams fighting for the same position and with the quality we have we should win a lot of points."

Rangnick took time to mention the dissatisfaction of United fans during his post-game press conference, and questioned the "moaning" coming from some supporters.

Instead, he chose to heap praise on Potter's Seagulls, and claimed the decision to change formation was done to take more risks.

"We realised that they had too often possession of the ball and could only intercept in few situations," Rangnick said. "Should we change to a formation to back three? We decided to stick to 4-2-3-1 with more risk and it paid off.

"In the first 10 minutes of the second half we had more success moments and it raised the crowd, they were not moaning and were getting behind the team.

"I can understand if it feels to them like Brighton have 60% possession, that is not what they want to see."
