Ralf Rangnick doesn't rate four Man Utd defenders but hasn't written off Harry Maguire

Ralf Rangnick does not fancy four Manchester United defenders – but Harry Maguire is not among them.

The German coach had been brought in after the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November to help steady the ship and provide a smooth transition for the next manager. But Rangnick has overseen a disastrous spell since taking charge on an interim basis.

United are sixth in the Premier League but have their lowest points total in the competition at this stage of the season. The latest humiliation came against Arsenal, who beat them 3-1 at the Emirates on Saturday.

Plenty has been made of the Red Devils this campaign but one thing that can be agreed is the complete disarray at the back. Maguire has come under huge fire this season for his performances.

However, Rangnick does not count him among the defenders that he rates the least – reserving that judgment for four others in the backline. Mirror Football understands that the 63-year-old is set to hand incoming manager Erik ten Hag a damning dossier full of details on United's under-performers. In it are his assessments of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof, which make poor reading for them.

Rangnick does not believe they are good enough for United while Maguire was also singled out. However, the Red Devils interim coach had sympathy for the Englishman, who he reckons has had to carry the can for United's inept displays.

After spending £80million on the defender, he also believes that the club cannot simply just write him off. There is also too much work to be done in the summer for Ten Hag to sink his teeth into without booting the world's most expensive defender out of the club.

There is the issue of midfield where the lack of a top-quality player has hurt United badly over the course of the season. Declan Rice has been linked and the West Ham star recently turned down a new contract in east London.

Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni has also been scouted throughout the season but Chelsea and Real Madrid are also in the race for his signature. While up front, there is another problem where Anthony Martial is expected to leave on a permanent basis, Edinson Cavani's contract will expire and Cristiano Ronaldo's future could be up in the air if they fail to land Champions League football.
