Ralf Rangnick believes Raphael Varane has enjoyed a breakthrough at Manchester United

Ralf Rangnick thought Raphael Varane had his 'best game' for Manchester United in their FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough and no longer has any injury issues.

Varane played 90 minutes before he was substituted as a precaution at the start of extra-time for Phil Jones and the Frenchman is expected to start again in the Premier League at Burnley on Tuesday night.

United paid £42million to sign Varane, 28, from Real Madrid in the summer but the centre-back has had two lay-offs with groin and hamstring injuries that caused him to miss nine weeks of the season.

The France international regained fitness in December and has started in United's last six matches.

"I think he has arrived in the meantime," Rangnick said. "He seems to be physically fit, he has no issues anymore with injuries.

"I thought that until he had to be substituted against Middlesbrough he did extremely well with Harry [Maguire], he played probably his best game. Knowing it was a Championship team but a very ambitious Championship team.

"I'm very happy to have him back again for tomorrow's game. Hopefully, we can have him in the same fitness, shape and in the same form that he played against Middlesbrough for the upcoming games."

Varane is expected to partner Maguire again at Turf Moor in what could be an unchanged outfield team from the Middlesbrough tie.

David de Gea is set to replace Dean Henderson in goal.
