Ralf Rangnick assesses his own spell as Manchester United manager

Ralf Rangnick admits he is not happy with the lack of progress Manchester Unite d have shown since he took charge of the club on an interim basis last November.

Rangnick, 63, arrived at the club tasked with steadying the ship until a new permanent manager could be found, but has been unable to solve many of the issues that plagued the side at the start of the season. United saw their hopes of Champions League qualification all but ended with a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday and after the match, the interim manager was asked what he has made of his spell in charge of the club.

"I'm not happy with the number of points that we won, quite obviously, and also with the way that we defend," Rangnick told TV2.

"I think we did that better [defend] in the first couple of games. But we just concede too many goals. Even [against Arsenal] the way we defended in and around our own box was just not good enough. That is what I am not happy about.

"We could easily have six, eight, ten points more, but we don't, and that is why I am not happy with what we have achieved in the last couple of months."

When asked if he has left the United side in a better state than it was in when he took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the interim manager added: "I think we showed some improvement in the first three months, that was quite obvious. We had a point average of two until three or four weeks ago.

"But the last couple of results and games, at home against Leicester, losing 4-0 at Liverpool, 3-1 here — again, improved performance but still conceding three goals — it is just too much if you concede on average three or four goals. This is what happened before I arrived then I can not be happy."
