The heavy rains that lashed Koppal and Vijayanagara on Monday-Tuesday intervening night have disrupted normal life in the two districts. Deputy Commissioners of both districts declared holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday.
The rainwater flowing from the hills and swollen streams have flooded paddy fields, destroying the recently planted saplings at many villages in Gangavathi taluk. Houses built with mud have developed cracks while low-lying areas in towns and cities remained inundated. Tungabhadra Canal water flooded residential localities in Karatagi town. Kukanur, Munirabad, Tavaragera, Kushtagi, Karatagi, Alavandi and Hanumasagara were the worst hit areas in Koppal district.
Banana plantations near Hampi and Kamalapur areas in Vijayanagara district were destroyed by the floodwaters. The road leading to the Ugranarasimha monument in Hampi was also submerged.
Many villages including Kohinur, Batagera and Harakud in Basavakalyan taluk of Bidar district also saw a heavy downpour and resultant flooding on Monday night and Tuesday morning. It is learnt that crops on over 2000 acres were destroyed in the taluk.
Ballari district administration and firefighters have rescued 24 people who were stranded near Yalpi Kaggalu village in Ballari taluk. The people had gone to the field as usual and got stranded as the water level in the Hagari river suddenly went up on Monday. Ballari Assistant Commissioner Akash and tahsildar Vishwanath were on the spot monitoring the rescue operation.
The officers also visited Moka, Godehal, Sanganakallu, Pramadevanahalli and other places where the standing crops were destroyed in the floods.
