Rain on Kirkcudbright's big parade doesn't dampen the spirits

It may have rained on Kirkcudbright’s big parade but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits.

The crowds lined the streets for the popular procession, which was back on Saturday for the first time since 2019 after the coronavirus pandemic.

And while the weather may have turned nasty, the atmosphere certainly didn’t.

Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities chairman John Blaikie said: “It was a damp day but people came out to support it. The crowds still lined the streets and the parade probably stretched for half a mile.

“I felt really for one group of kids who had come from Newton Stewart – their lorry didn’t turn up so they ended up walking round in their costumes.

Kirkcudbright Princess Elle Thomson enjoyed the day (Bobby Geddes)

“The Rotary didn’t even set up due to the weather but we did have Punch and Judy. He played to two kids in the morning and three kids in the afternoon - he said if any turned up he would put on a show.

“Thanks to everyone who took part.”

Parade results - judged by Ian and Sue Bradbury from Kirkcudbright and Anne and Keith Brown from Skipton.

First lorry, overall winner and highly commended: Old MacDonald’s Farm (Johnston Nursery).

Small lorries: 1 Viking Hoard (Jimmy More, Galloway Vets and friends); 2 = We Don’t Talk About Bruno & Maggie’s Tour; 3 Jubilee Celebrations.

Walking adults: 1 Squid Game; 2 Saints Walking Football.

Walking children: 1 Mr Bean; 2= Barbie Girls & Charlie Chaplin; 3 Frozen.

Visitors’ Shield: 3 Rs Horse Rescue Centre.
