Several parts of Andhra Pradesh received light to heavy rain on June 20 (Tuesday) as the southwest monsoon advanced through Raichur in Karnataka near Kurnool district and Kavali in Nellore district over Rayalaseema and south coastal region.
People in many parts of the State heaved a sigh of relief as rains and thundershowers brought down mercury levels for the first time in the last several weeks.
According to the Andhra Pradesh State Development Planning Society, Seethanagaram mandal and Tallapudi mandals in East Godavari districts recorded 97.75 mm and 80.0 mm of rainfall respectively as of 7 p.m. on June 20 (Tuesday). Vijayawada (Rural) mandal in NTR district recorded 66.5 mm rain, while Kondapi in Prakasam district recorded 65.5 mm precipitation.
Many mandals in NTR, Nellore, Nandyal, West Godavari, Sri Sathya Sai, Guntur, East Godavari, Bapatla, Prakasam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Palnadu, Eluru, Kurnool and Krishna districts received rainfall somewhere between 10 mm and 60 mm of rainfall during the same period.
Heavy downpours in Vijayawada came as a relief to the denizens who were reeling under sweltering weather for the past many days. However, pedestrians and motorists faced inconveniences due to waterlogged roads and traffic snarls.
The maximum temperatures in most of the areas in the State remained below 40 degrees Celsius, while the highest maximum temperature of 41.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Amaravati.
Kavali recorded 41.0° C followed by Jangamaheswara Puram (40.6° C ), Nandigama (40.6° C ), Nandyal (40.2° C ), Kurnool (39.9° C ), Nellore (39.5° C ), Ongole (39.5° C ), Gannavaram-Vijayawada (38.8° C ), Anantapur (38.2° C ), Kadapa (37.6° C ), Bapatla (37.4° C ), Tirupati (37.2° C ), Machilipatnam (36.8° C ), Kalingapatnam (36.4° C ), Visakhapatnam Airport (36.4° C ), Tuni (35.7° C ), Kakinada (35.6° C ) and Visakhapatnam (34.8° C ).
Meanwhile, the conditions are favourable for the advancement of southwest monsoon in the State during the next two to three days, said a forecast by India Meteorological Department (IMD). Light to heavy rains and thundershowers are likely to occur in the coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema districts during the next five days, it said.
