Rain and Snow Threaten Holiday Travel, Flooding Possible in Houston

Storm moving east, bringing rains and flooding to California and Arizona.

Unleashing heavy rains and causing flooding in California and Arizona earlier this week, the storm has now moved eastward, bringing with it the potential for more precipitation in the Southern Rockies and Central Plains. As the holiday weekend approaches, this weather system is expected to impact travel plans for many across the region.

Despite a current cloud cover in Phoenix, all airports in the area are operating smoothly. However, airports in Dallas, Austin, and Houston may experience some disruptions later today as the rain moves in. Meanwhile, the Rockies are expected to see snowfall, and the plains could also experience some rain.

The major concern lies in Houston, where heavy rainfall is predicted later today. There is a possibility of significant downpours, especially west of the city, with up to six inches of rain causing potential flooding. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, particularly around underpasses.

While there may be snow in parts of Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota, the focus for this system remains on substantial rainfall. The Gulf Coast, stretching all the way from the coast to Atlanta and down to Jacksonville, is likely to experience wet conditions. Temperatures in the affected areas are well above normal, with some spots seeing temperatures 30 degrees higher than average.

The situation is quite different in Chicago, as the city will not be experiencing any significant snowfall. Instead, temperatures will hover around 50 degrees throughout the weekend, offering a reprieve from the usual winter chill.

Looking ahead to Christmas, there is a chance of snow from Minneapolis down to parts of Nebraska and Kansas. However, it is the rainfall that will have a lasting impact. The East Coast may experience a wet Monday, with parts of the region expecting heavy showers.

With the prolonged precipitation forecasted, it is advisable to have alternate indoor activities prepared for the holiday season. Atlanta and Jacksonville, in particular, will see significant rainfall, while Chicago can anticipate a relatively dry period with mild temperatures. It appears that this rain is not in a hurry to leave, creating a wet start to the week and potentially lingering until Tuesday.

As travelers and residents alike navigate the wet conditions, it's essential to prioritize safety and exercise patience. Stay informed about any weather advisories and plan accordingly to ensure a smooth and enjoyable holiday season.
