Railway engineering firms creating 200 Derby jobs

Two engineering firms have said they are creating about 200 jobs in Derby.

Train builder Alstom, which replaced Bombardier in the city, said it wants to hire 100 mechanical fitters.

And an on-site supplier, Motherson, said it needs the same amount of electrical fitters to join it.

Both companies are working with recruitment agency Shorterm to fill the positions which are being offered to meet their manufacturing demands for the year ahead.

For the roles at Motherson, no experience is required and full paid training will be provided with all employment backgrounds considered.

The positions at Alstom do require engineering experience. It is looking for individuals who have previously worked in construction, mechanical, electrical, automotive, aerospace and shop fitting.

Shorterm held a recruitment day on March 17 at Pride Park and is working with Derby Jobcentre to fill the positions.

A spokesperson from Shorterm told Derbyshire Live: "We are pleased to provide the opportunity for local people in the Derbyshire area to enter the buoyant rail industry.

"Working with two global organisations Shorterm will provide training to up-skill individuals without previous rail experience to enter the industry and secure a position.

"We had an excellent turnout today giving people the opportunity to meet our clients to discuss the positions on offer and in some cases try out the work.

"We look forward to a number of today's candidates starting their new careers with our clients in the forthcoming weeks."

John Forkin, managing director of Marketing Derby, told Derbyshire Live: "Derby hosts Europe’s largest rail cluster and this sector continues to grow due to increased investment in rail.

"It’s great to see so many employment opportunities becoming available and we are confident these will be quickly snapped up."

A spokesperson from Alstom said: "We are pleased to be working again with Shorterm Group and our key on-site supplier, Motherson, to find local skilled staff to help resource our busy rolling stock order book here in Derby."
