Rail commuters found out on Wednesday they will face a hike in season ticket prices of 1.6%, despite workers being told to return to offices.
The rise, which is typically based on July's Retail Prices Index (RPI), is expected to come into force in January, although there is speculation that Government ministers are considering a delay due to dwindling passenger numbers.
Rail regulator the Office of Rail and Road said regulated fares went up by an average of 2.7% in January 2020, following the July 2019 RPI figure of 2.8%, as PA reports.
The UK, Scottish and Welsh Governments regulate rises for around half of fares, including season tickets on most commuter routes, some off-peak return tickets on long-distance journeys, and tickets for travel around major cities at any time.
Unregulated fares, including advance and peak long-distance tickets, can be increased at the discretion of train companies.
The latest move means prices for popular season tickets could rise by as much as £80 a year.
Ministers have been urged to scrap the fare rise, with Manuel Cortes, general secretary of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association, saying "doing so in the middle of a health emergency and emerging economic crisis will help no-one".
